St. Machar’s Cathedral is a church of Scotland “High Kirk” situated in old Aberdeen. According to legend, St Machar, who is said to have been a companion of St. Columba on his journey to Iona, founded a site of worship in old Aberdeen in around 580AD. The cathedral is a great example of a fortified kirk, with twin towers which hold spiral staircases to the upper floors and battlements.
